It Feels Good to Be Yourself: A Book About Gender Identity ...

In this gentle, accessible book, the reader meets several interesting people of different sizes, ethnicities, and abilities. They each have diverse gender identities. The reader is introduced to the concept of transgender and nonbinary identities, as well as cisgender identities. Two nonbinary characters have different genders—one is both boy and girl and one is neither boy nor girl, illustrating that there are many ways to be nonbinary.

With gorgeous watercolor, gouache, and ink illustrations and easy-to-understand text, this elementary grade nonfiction book is both beautiful and interesting. Kids who are transgender and/or nonbinary will be thrilled to see themselves represented in these pages, and cisgender kids will learn interesting and relevant new concepts. The primary message is that “there are a never-ending number of ways to be yourself in the world.” This is a hopeful, exciting message for kids of all gender identities.

It Feels Good to Be Yourself was a 2020 Rainbow Book List title and is an “own voices” book. I recommend it for all public and elementary school libraries.
