The Beyond Hanky Code Project

We explore media by, for and about sexual and gender minorities, within the context of our personal experiences. We want this site to have enough information for people to build reading lists, lesson plans, GSA libraries, and whatever else that might begin with a search for “best GLBTQ books and movies” and end up with more titles than direction.

Why Hanky Code?

Our scope includes written and filmed media, fiction and non-fiction, of any age range, with meaningful relevance to modern ideas about being a sexual or gender minority. We aim to put that media in context and identify its relevance to us today. We also look at language used to communicate sexual and gender minority identities, existence and behaviors, aiming not to provide a dictionary but rather historical usages and contexts.
