The Family Book

Parr, Todd. (2003). The Family Book. New York: Little, Brown and Company.

Image of brightly colored smiling parents with text reading: "Some families have two moms or two dads."Todd Parr crafts some of the most gentle, beautiful, inclusive children’s books I’ve ever seen. His art is Keith Haring-esque, with bold, bright colors and simple lines. And his text is wonderfully reassuring for children from any kind of family structure.

This delightful book presents pictures of different kinds of families with simple descriptions: “Some families have two moms or two dads. Some families have one parent instead of two.” Parr describes adoptive families, stepfamilies, extended families, family habits and hobbies, and how families support and encourage each other. The final message is that all families are special.

The Family Book won the 2004 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Best Book Award.
